Laos — Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto paid an official visit to the President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thongloun Sisoulith, and Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone in Laos on Friday morning, September 6.
Prabowo was welcomed by President Sisoulith with an honor guard. The visit to Laos followed Prabowo’s official trip to Brunei Darussalam.
“Your Excellency, it is an honor,” greeted President Sisoulith as he invited Prabowo to sit.
The two leaders engaged in warm discussions, addressing various strategic issues aimed at strengthening the cooperation between Indonesia and Laos, including defense, education, and other sectors beneficial to both nations.
During the meeting, Prabowo also expressed his gratitude for the congratulations extended by the Lao President on his victory in the 2024 Indonesian presidential election.
“Thank you for receiving and welcoming me. I also appreciate your congratulations on my election as President of Indonesia. I have come to introduce myself before my inauguration on October 20,” Prabowo stated.
Prabowo emphasized his commitment to continuing the longstanding cooperative relationship between Indonesia and Laos across various sectors in the future.
“We understand that Indonesia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic not only share a bilateral relationship but also a commitment to regional stability and security within the ASEAN community,” Prabowo remarked.
In addition to defense collaboration, Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s readiness to contribute expertise and resources in disaster relief efforts.
“We also look forward to engaging in joint exercises to enhance our collective response to natural disasters in our region,” he added. (RR)
