Prabowo Subianto Fulfills Promise to Visit Papua New Guinea’s PM James Marape in His Country

Jakarta – Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto honored his promise to visit Papua New Guinea (PNG) and meet with Prime Minister James Marape in his country on Wednesday (21/8). Prabowo also expressed his gratitude for the warm reception.

Previously, Marape visited the Indonesian Ministry of Defense on July 15, during which he extended an invitation to Prabowo to visit Papua New Guinea. Prabowo expressed his desire to visit soon after.

“Fulfilling my promise to visit PNG soon after the visit of PM H.E. James Marape to the Indonesian Ministry of Defense in Jakarta last month,” Prabowo stated.

In his visit to Papua New Guinea, Prabowo mentioned that before departing, he sought permission from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

“Mr. President (Jokowi) said, yes, you must go there (Papua New Guinea),” Prabowo shared.

During the meeting, Prabowo emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea across various sectors.

The President-elect of Indonesia for the 2024-2029 term highlighted the many opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.

“We complement each other in many areas, so there is much that can be done, whether in food production, agriculture, perhaps fisheries, mining, minerals, and also tourism,” Prabowo explained.

Additionally, Prabowo extended an invitation for students from Papua New Guinea to study in Indonesia.

“I also mentioned to your head of defense and defense minister that we are opening all military schools (to Papua New Guinea). If you want to educate your young generation, we are very pleased,” he added.

“You can also send more students to our universities. We will help provide scholarships for you,” Prabowo continued.

Prabowo emphasized that education is key to a nation’s progress and is crucial.

Meanwhile, Marape expressed his gratitude for the Indonesian government’s response to Papua New Guinea and noted that Indonesia is the 14th largest economy in the world.

“Both sides value this relationship and want to further strengthen it,” Marape said.

He also emphasised the importance of fostering and enhancing friendship between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. (RR)
