Magelang — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia’s potential membership in BRICS would broaden the nation’s global partnerships, ensuring that Indonesia is not confined to any single bloc.
In an exclusive interview with Retno Pinasti on SCTV, quoted on Monday (October 28), Prabowo noted that several of Indonesia’s neighboring countries with major economies are already part of BRICS.
Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia’s participation would enable it to be represented in multiple spheres rather than aligning with any particular bloc.
“When we look at BRICS, we see major economies like India, Brazil, China, and South Africa already there, with several of our neighbors, including Thailand, Malaysia, the UAE, and Egypt, expressing interest,” he said.
“We believe that Indonesia, too, should have a presence there. We aim to be on good terms everywhere. Indonesia cannot afford to be bound by blocs; we want to be everywhere,” he continued.
Previously, in a statement from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, October 25, 2024, Indonesia expressed its intent to join BRICS during the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 23-24, 2024. This announcement marks the beginning of Indonesia’s formal membership application process to BRICS. (RR)
