Jakarta — A mix of emotion and pride was etched on the face of Saimin, an elderly man from Indramayu, West Java. He said he was overwhelmed with joy to witness firsthand the lowering of the national flag, the Sang Saka Merah Putih, at Merdeka Palace during Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day commemoration on Sunday (Aug. 17) afternoon.
“I came to the palace alone. Every year I usually just watch it on TV at home, but this time I wanted to see it in person at the palace,” he said, his voice filled with emotion.
Saimin described President Prabowo Subianto as a leader who is close to the people. “I’m happy and proud to have this new president, a leader who is down to earth and cares for those who are struggling,” he added.
He noted that Prabowo’s hard work is evident, pointing out how the president often visits communities across the country. “He works tirelessly, maybe hardly sleeps. He often travels to the regions, visiting those affected by disasters. He is very responsive. That’s why we are happy, and that’s why people back in the village are motivated to boost agricultural production,” Saimin explained.
On this Independence Day, Saimin also expressed a hope for unity. “We are already the Republic of Indonesia, we’ve been independent for 80 years. At 80, we should be mature. We, as Indonesians, must stay united and stop fighting among ourselves,” he said firmly.
As he concluded his story, Saimin once again conveyed his gratitude. “We thank President Prabowo for inviting us to the palace,” he said.
