Children of Pacu Jalur Beam with Joy After Performing and Shaking Hands with President Prabowo

Jakarta — Wide smiles never left the faces of Wirotirta and Aryana, two young Pacu Jalur performers who took part in the Independence Day celebrations at Merdeka Palace on Sunday (Aug. 17), marking Indonesia’s 80th anniversary. For them, the chance to perform before President Prabowo Subianto was an unforgettable experience.

“We’re so happy—really excited to perform and shake hands with the President,” they said almost in unison, their voices brimming with enthusiasm.

The children admitted they felt both proud and moved, especially when President Prabowo clasped their small hands after the performance. “The President is kind. We wish him good health and blessings in abundance,” they added innocently.

Dressed in vibrant green traditional Malay attire, the Pacu Jalur children captivated thousands of spectators. Their synchronized, energetic movements brought the pride of regional culture to the national stage. Cheers and applause erupted from the crowd, adding to the festive spirit of the Independence Day celebration at the palace grounds.

The excitement didn’t stop there. Earlier, members of a pencak silat troupe had showcased their martial arts prowess, followed by action star Iko Uwais who also performed the traditional Indonesian art of self-defense. The festivities concluded with the graceful Tari Payung Merah Putih (Red-and-White Umbrella Dance), a cultural performance that enriched the celebratory atmosphere of Independence Day.
