Xi Jinping–Prabowo Meet in Beijing, Agree on Key Issues

On the afternoon of September 3, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indonesian President Prabowo at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. President Prabowo had traveled specifically to attend the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, as well as the global Anti-Fascist War.

Xi Jinping emphasized that President Prabowo’s presence, despite various challenges, to attend the commemoration reflects his great importance toward China–Indonesia relations and the sincere friendship of the Indonesian people toward the Chinese people. China supports President Prabowo’s administration, supports Indonesia in restoring order and stability, and backs Indonesia’s efforts to continue developing and becoming stronger.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of China–Indonesia diplomatic relations, the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, and the 70th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung. Regardless of changes in the international landscape, Indonesia has always upheld an independent and self-reliant national spirit, championed mutually beneficial cooperation, and demonstrated great responsibility as a country committed to peaceful development.

China is willing to work with Indonesia to preserve the original spirit of establishing diplomatic ties, advance the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, and promote the building of a China–Indonesia community with a shared future at a higher level, contributing to the progress of humankind.

Xi Jinping stressed that both sides must adhere to the right course, deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership and development strategy alignment, and make China–Indonesia relations a model at the regional and global levels. Full use should be made of the “2+2” Foreign and Defense Ministers’ Dialogue mechanism, deepen security and defense cooperation, build a high-quality Belt and Road, expand two-way openness, and develop cooperation in strategic minerals, digital economy, artificial intelligence, as well as agriculture and fisheries.

China is also ready to share its poverty alleviation experience with Indonesia, facilitate people-to-people exchanges, and strengthen cultural interaction. As two major countries in the Global South, China and Indonesia must jointly oppose unilateralism and bullying practices, safeguard regional peace and stability, and uphold international fairness and justice.

During the meeting, President Prabowo outlined the domestic situation, noting that conditions are becoming increasingly stable. He also expressed his delight to be with the Chinese people in celebrating the 80th anniversary of victory in the war against Japan. He stressed that Indonesia and China are good and true friends, and that relations with China are a top priority in Indonesia’s foreign policy.

Prabowo expressed gratitude for China’s valuable support toward Indonesia’s economic and social development, saying that relations between the two countries are now at their best period in history. Indonesia looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China in trade, investment, finance, and infrastructure, to ensure that bilateral ties yield more tangible results, bring greater benefits to the peoples of both countries, and make a positive contribution to regional peace and stability.

The meeting was also attended by Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and other relevant officials.
