Magelang — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto shared a story from his youth about founding a non-governmental organization (NGO) alongside several activists, including the well-known figure Soe Hok Gie.
In an exclusive interview titled “Prabowo Speaks” with Retno Pinasti, quoted on Monday (October 28), Prabowo recounted his involvement in establishing the NGO with other young activists of his generation.
“Yes, I was involved back then with several young activists, establishing some developmental projects, though I’m not sure if it was the very first NGO in Indonesia,” Prabowo responded when asked whether the “Development NGO” he helped establish in 1968 was the first of its kind in the country.
Prabowo mentioned Soe Hok Gie among the people instrumental in founding the organization. Despite being only 17 at the time, Prabowo said he already felt a deep concern for the wellbeing of the people.
“Yes, including Soe Hok Gie and other friends. Back in ’68, many young students were joining action groups, and we wanted to contribute,” he said.
“From an early age, I was already concerned with the struggles of our brothers and sisters in rural and remote areas,” Prabowo added.
He acknowledged that his youthful idealism was greatly influenced by his father, the esteemed economist Soemitro Djojohadikoesoemo.
“My father and the spirit of that time—it was just after independence, and we wanted to make sure our nation didn’t fall too far behind. So, our idealism was strong back then,” he explained.
In the same interview, Prabowo also shared his vision on several issues, including law enforcement, anti-corruption efforts, and his commitment to the Free Nutritious Meals program. (RR)
