Bogor – Warmth and respect filled the atmosphere at the inauguration of the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Campus at Indonesia’s Defence University (Unhan) RI on Tuesday (June 11).
The event brought together two distinguished figures—Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Indonesia’s 6th President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).
Both military academy alumni stood side by side, embodying leadership and shared vision.
SBY’s presence at the inauguration carried profound significance. He was the founder and initiator of Defence University 15 years ago during his presidency. This time, however, he attended as an honorary guest, personally invited by Prabowo.
“Just 20 minutes ago, President Prabowo asked me to say a few words at today’s event. And because it was a request from the Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, my only response was: ‘Ready,’” SBY remarked.
With deep pride, SBY expressed his appreciation for Prabowo’s efforts in expanding Unhan, transforming it into a leading institution.
“Our message is one of gratitude, Mr. President. We are proud and grateful that President Prabowo has elevated this university to an outstanding level,” SBY stated.
Prabowo, in turn, responded with a personal anecdote, adding a warm and humorous touch to the moment. He recalled their shared time as cadets.
“SBY graduated in ‘73. Since our alma mater cared deeply for me, truly loved me, they decided to give me an extra year of education,” Prabowo joked, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.
The lighthearted exchange softened the atmosphere, highlighting the close relationship between the two leaders, both of whom have held Indonesia’s highest office.
This moment served as a reminder of their shared mission—to shape future leaders who are not only strong in military strategy but also deeply committed to serving the nation.
With their common background as soldiers and now as national leaders, Prabowo and SBY stood together on a campus that symbolizes knowledge, patriotism, and Indonesia’s future.
