During a joint visit to the Nusantara Capital Region (IKN) in East Kalimantan Province on Monday, August 12, 2024, President Joko Widodo and President-Elect Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed their commitment to the ongoing development of the IKN. Both leaders agreed that the IKN is a symbol of the nation’s future that must continue to be vigorously promoted and completed, despite the challenges involved.

In a press statement, President Jokowi highlighted the importance of the core governmental area currently under construction at the IKN as a strong foundation for attracting more investors.

“The government has started building the core area for governance here. This shows our strong desire to complete the physical aspects, including facilities for the Presidential and Vice Presidential palaces, the coordinating ministries, and other ministries, which we hope will encourage as many investors as possible to invest in the IKN because investing in the IKN is investing in the future, not just for now,” said President Jokowi.

Regarding the Presidential Decree on the capital’s relocation, President Jokowi stated that the process involves more than just administrative issues.

“We will see because it involves not just administration, not just about the presidential or executive orders, but also the on-site process, which we need to consider, readiness on the ground. Even moving houses can be complicated, let alone moving the capital. So, it shouldn’t be underestimated,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, President-Elect Prabowo Subianto reiterated his determination to continue, and if possible, complete the development of the IKN initiated by President Jokowi. “I am committed to continuing, ideally to finish it. President Jokowi has played a historic role as the initiator, and at the very least, I will continue it. If possible, I will be part of completing it,” Prabowo stated.

He also acknowledged that building a capital is not a quick or easy task but expressed optimism that within the next three to five years, the capital’s functions would be fully operational.

Concluding his statement, Prabowo also affirmed his commitment to officiate from the IKN after his inauguration. “When you have a capital, the president must be in the capital,” he said, indicating his seriousness about establishing the IKN as the center of government and a symbol of Indonesia’s progress.
