During the full cabinet meeting at Garuda Palace in the Nusantara Capital (IKN), East Kalimantan Province, on Monday, August 12, 2024, Minister of Defense and President-Elect Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed his commitment to continuing and completing the development of the Nusantara Capital (IKN). Prabowo emphasized that the IKN project is crucial for balancing development across the country and for reducing the burden on Java Island, which has long been the center of population and economic activity.
“I want to make it clear, as I have already emphasized several times today, that we will complete the IKN project. It is indeed necessary, as the President mentioned earlier regarding the need for equitable development and our desire to alleviate the strain on Java Island’s capacity to support population and activity concentration,” Prabowo stated.
Prabowo expressed pride in the strong cultural nuances of IKN and appreciated the efforts of President Joko Widodo and his cabinet who initiated the IKN development. He promised to expedite the construction process, especially for the government center.
“I am also determined to reiterate here that we will continue. If possible, we will accelerate,” said Prabowo.
“In this regard, I want to assure the Authority that we have allocated a substantial budget, and I believe we can complete several important aspects of IKN,” he added.
According to Prabowo, the main priority is the construction of critical buildings such as the Parliament building, housing for members, and office spaces for the judiciary, including the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court. “Once these are completed, the governmental functions of the capital can actually begin to operate here. So, we need not wait for the rest. I believe the rest will follow,” he explained.
Furthermore, Prabowo highlighted the importance of being prepared for potential disasters, particularly forest fires, given the IKN’s concept as a forest city. He stressed the need for advanced technology for monitoring and enhancing the fire brigade. “There must not be the slightest chance to threaten the National Capital,” Prabowo firmly stated.
He also expressed gratitude for the support he has received from President Joko Widodo and the ministers in preparing the upcoming State Budget. This support, according to Prabowo, makes him very optimistic despite significant global challenges.
Prabowo is confident that with the completion of the government center at IKN, more investors will be attracted to invest in the new capital. “I am optimistic that the completion of the government center along with other investments will attract even more investors,” he concluded.
This inaugural full cabinet meeting held in IKN underscores the incoming administration’s commitment to continuing the vision for IKN development initiated by President Joko Widodo and ensures the readiness of IKN as the new governmental hub of Indonesia.
