Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has called for clean governance and honest leadership as the foundation for lifting Muslim-majority nations out of poverty, inequality, and other pressing global challenges.
The statement was made during his keynote speech at the opening of the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), held at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (May 14).
In his remarks, Prabowo emphasized that the Islamic world must not remain a bystander in global affairs, but instead take a leading role in shaping a more just, peaceful, and prosperous world.
“We are facing challenges that are at the root of our weaknesses: poverty, hunger, corruption, unequal access to education, and the failure to manage and safeguard our own resources,” Prabowo said.
He welcomed this year’s PUIC theme—“PUIC Silver Jubilee: Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience”—calling it timely and urgent. According to Prabowo, the path to progress must begin with addressing domestic shortcomings.
“Without strong and accountable governance, without leaders who are honest and just, no nation can be resilient—let alone competitive,” he stressed.
Prabowo also reminded attendees of the golden age of Islamic civilization, when Muslim scholars and leaders were at the forefront of scientific and technological advancements. He cited historical figures such as Umar ibn al-Khattab and Mehmed the Conqueror (Muhammad Al-Fatih) as examples of courageous, just, and visionary leadership committed to the welfare of their people.
Reaffirming Indonesia’s unwavering support for Palestine, Prabowo urged Muslim nations to move beyond words and take concrete action to end the prolonged suffering of the Palestinian people.
“The time has come to go beyond discussions. No more empty resolutions. The Palestinian people have suffered for far too long. What they need now is real action. Indonesia will always stand with Palestine,” Prabowo declared.
