London — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer jointly called for peace in the ongoing Gaza conflict during their meeting at Starmer’s residence at 10 Downing Street, London, on Thursday (11/21) local time.

“Regarding the Middle East conflict, we expressed deep concern over the serious humanitarian situation in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire,” emphasized Prabowo and Starmer in their joint statement following the meeting, published on the UK government’s official website.

They also called for the release of all hostages, rapid and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, adherence to international humanitarian law, and de-escalation from all parties involved.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to a two-state solution, emphasizing that it remains the only viable long-term solution where an independent Palestinian State and Israel coexist in peace and security,” the two leaders stated.

Beyond Gaza, Prabowo and Starmer urged de-escalation of tensions in Lebanon and stressed the need for peaceful and diplomatic resolutions.

The UK expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s role in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping mission.

“We underscored the urgent need to ensure the protection of UNIFIL personnel and the security of United Nations (UN) premises,” said Prabowo and Starmer.

In the context of the war in Ukraine, both leaders reiterated their commitment to upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

They agreed that for peace to be just and sustainable, it must respect the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity and be built on inclusive engagement and dialogue. (RR)
