Rio de Janeiro — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, underscored the enduring relevance of the “Bandung Spirit” during the BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday (July 6).
Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, reported that President Prabowo emphasized the nation’s commitment to global peace and respect for international law in his remarks to the forum.
“The President reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to supporting global peace through multilateralism and upholding international law,” Airlangga stated.
He added that Prabowo firmly rejected war and the application of double standards in international affairs.
“The President clearly stated his rejection of war and of the use of double standards,” he said.
Airlangga also noted that President Prabowo reminded fellow BRICS leaders of the importance of upholding the “Bandung Spirit”—a reference to the principles of solidarity among developing nations established at the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia.
“He specifically highlighted the importance of the Bandung Spirit and called for its continued relevance within the BRICS forum, particularly in relation to the Palestinian issue,” Airlangga explained.
Indonesia’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha Nasir, confirmed that the reference to Bandung was warmly welcomed by the summit’s host country.
“This is Indonesia’s first participation as a full member, and our presence was warmly received. In fact, before President Prabowo even mentioned the Bandung Spirit, Brazil—serving as Chair—had already invoked the Bandung principles in its opening statement,” said Arrmanatha.
He added that Brazil expressed hope that BRICS could revive the Bandung legacy to further advance the interests of developing nations.
