Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver who died after being struck by a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle during a demonstration that ended in chaos.
Prabowo arrived at Affan’s family home on Jalan Blora, Central Jakarta, on Friday evening (Aug. 29) at around 9:50 p.m. Wearing a black peci, he was greeted by residents in the neighborhood before meeting the grieving family.
The President spent around 20 minutes at the residence, personally expressing his deepest condolences to Affan’s family.
“My condolences. Please take care,” Prabowo said to Affan’s father.
“We trust you, Sir,” the father replied.
Prabowo also conveyed his sympathy to Affan’s mother, expressing regret over the tragedy.
“My deepest condolences. I deeply regret what has happened,” Prabowo said while holding her hand.
“I never thought you would come here, Sir,” Affan’s father added, moved by the visit.
Prabowo then embraced Affan’s mother and siblings in a moment filled with emotion.
During the visit, the family voiced their hope that the case would be thoroughly investigated.
“This is fate, but we ask that justice be upheld,” a family member told Prabowo.
“Certainly. Absolutely,” Prabowo assured them.
Earlier, Prabowo had released an official statement regarding the incident, expressing his shock and disappointment over what he called excessive actions by security officers.
“Once again, I am shocked and disappointed by the excessive actions of the officers. I have ordered a full and transparent investigation into last night’s incident, and all officers involved must be held accountable,” Prabowo stressed.
“We will take the strongest possible action in accordance with the law,” he added.
Prabowo further emphasized that the government would provide full support to the bereaved family. “The government will guarantee the family’s livelihood and extend special care to his parents and siblings,” he said.
