Jakarta — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a transparent investigation into the death of ride-hailing driver Affan Kurniawan, who was killed during a protest that turned violent on Thursday night (Aug. 28). He emphasized that any officers found guilty of misconduct must be held accountable.
“Once again, I am shocked and deeply disappointed by the excessive actions of certain officers. I have instructed that last night’s incident be investigated thoroughly and transparently, and that those involved must be held responsible,” Prabowo said in an official video statement on Friday (Aug. 29).
The president stressed that he would not tolerate law enforcement personnel acting outside proper conduct and established regulations.
“We will take the strongest possible action in accordance with the law,” he added.
At the outset of his remarks, Prabowo extended his condolences to the victim’s family.
“On behalf of myself and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, I wish to express my deepest condolences. I am profoundly concerned and saddened that this tragedy occurred,” he said.
Prabowo also pledged government support for Affan’s family. “The government will ensure the well-being of his family and extend special care to his parents, siblings, and relatives,” he stated.
He further urged the public to remain calm and avoid provocation, underscoring that all citizens’ grievances would be noted and addressed.
In closing, the president warned Indonesians to be vigilant against groups seeking to exploit the incident to sow unrest.
“I call on the Indonesian people to stay alert. There are always elements that wish to incite turmoil and chaos. I want to remind everyone that such actions serve no one’s interest—not the people, not the community, and not our nation,” Prabowo said.
