Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, called on the national police force to remain deeply connected with the people and to embody empathy, especially for society’s most vulnerable. Speaking at the 79th Bhayangkara Day commemoration at the National Monument in Jakarta on Tuesday (July 1), the President urged members of the National Police (Polri) not to emulate the detached conduct often seen in law enforcement agencies of wealthy, developed nations.
“Indonesian police must not behave like the police forces of rich, developed countries. Our police must stand among the people, feel their suffering, and hear the cries of their hearts,” Prabowo declared before the police leadership and attending dignitaries.
His statement served as a reminder that the vision of Indonesian independence goes beyond sovereignty—it aims for prosperity and justice for all. A police force beloved by the people, he added, is one that champions the weak and defends the oppressed.
“Our nation needs a police force that is resilient, excellent, honest, and loved by the people—a police force that stands with the people, defends the people, protects the people, especially the poorest, most vulnerable, and most marginalized among us,” he said.
President Prabowo also commended Polri’s contributions to national strategic programs, particularly in food security and nutrition initiatives. He cited the country’s record-breaking corn production as a testament to the police’s direct engagement in improving public welfare.
“I’ve seen firsthand how the police have gone into the field, taken initiative, worked alongside the people, and supported our national food production efforts,” he noted.
In the face of ongoing challenges, Prabowo warned that the police institution would continue to face attempts to undermine its authority and morale. For this reason, he stressed that resilience, courage, and genuine empathy for the people are vital traits for Polri’s continued strength and relevance.
“There will always be efforts to weaken and discredit the police, to erode your spirit of service. That’s why I hope Polri today and in the future will be stronger, more resilient, and unshakable by any threat,” he said.
Prabowo concluded his remarks with a resolute call for the police to prioritize public interest above all and to uphold the public’s trust.
“Brothers and sisters, continue this struggle. Guard the people’s trust, and always put the interests of the people above everything else. Never, ever disappoint the people,” he concluded.
