Prabowo Honors Kwik Kian Gie: A Staunch Defender of Article 33 and the Pancasila Economy

Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of the nation’s prominent economic thinkers, Kwik Kian Gie, during his visit to the Sentosa Funeral Home at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto, Jakarta, on Wednesday (July 30). For Prabowo, the late Kwik was a national figure who made significant contributions to the country’s economic development.

“He was a statesman who rendered great service to the nation. His ideas were firmly rooted in the defense of the Pancasila economy and Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution. He was truly an extraordinary figure,” Prabowo stated.

President Prabowo also shared the personal closeness he had with Kwik, recalling how the late economist continued to offer advice even shortly before his death.

“I felt a personal connection with him. He gave me much counsel, and just a few days ago, he even sent me messages via WhatsApp—offering advice and thoughts. He never stopped reaching out,” he said.

Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia has lost not only a respected economist but one of its finest sons.

“I believe that’s all I can say for now—Indonesia has lost one of its best,” he concluded.

Kwik Kian Gie passed away on Monday evening, July 28, 2025, at the age of 90, at Medistra Hospital after several weeks of medical treatment. His remains were later brought to RSPAD for the funeral rites.

Kwik was widely known for holding several high-ranking positions in government, including: Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Finance, and Industry.

President Prabowo was accompanied at the funeral by several senior military figures, including General (Ret.) Wiranto, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Terawan Agus Putranto, and Major General (Ret.) Glenny Kairupan.
