Singapore – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has expressed admiration for several of Singapore’s flagship policies, particularly its public housing program, and revealed plans to adopt a similar model in Indonesia. During his official visit to Singapore, Prabowo emphasized that the development of affordable housing is being accelerated under his administration.
“I believe Singapore has implemented many successful policies. Chief among them is affordable housing for all citizens,” Prabowo said during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Monday (June 16). “This affordable housing initiative was first launched under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and continued by President Joko Widodo. Now, we are pushing hard to fast-track its completion.”
Prabowo disclosed that Indonesia aims to build one million affordable homes and vertical housing units (rusun) in 2025 alone.
He also highlighted Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, Temasek, as another model Indonesia is drawing inspiration from. In a similar vein, Indonesia has launched Danantara, a state-owned investment institution designed to manage and optimize government investments to drive long-term national economic growth.
“Danantara represents Indonesia’s future energy. We established Danantara for the benefit of future generations,” Prabowo explained.
The President added that when a policy is emulated by other countries, it is often a sign that the initiative is working well.
During the visit, Indonesia and Singapore signed three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on green energy development. These agreements cover clean electricity trading, cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS), and the joint development of a green industrial zone in Indonesia’s Riau Islands Province.
The visit marks a strategic deepening of bilateral ties, with a shared focus on sustainable development and future-oriented infrastructure.
