Jakarta — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed deep sorrow and concern following the death of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan during a demonstration that turned violent on Thursday evening (Aug. 28).
“On behalf of myself and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, I extend my deepest condolences. I am deeply saddened and troubled by this tragedy,” Prabowo said in an official video statement on Friday (Aug. 29).
The president pledged that the government would ensure Affan’s family is supported and given special attention. “The government will guarantee their livelihood and provide special care for his parents as well as his siblings,” he affirmed.
Prabowo also addressed concerns over the conduct of security forces during the incident. “I have ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into last night’s events. Those involved must be held accountable,” he said.
He stressed that there would be zero tolerance for law enforcement officers who act outside the boundaries of the law. “We will take the strongest possible action in accordance with the law,” Prabowo declared.
The president called on the public to remain calm and place their trust in the government, assuring that all grievances from citizens would be heard and addressed.
Prabowo further warned against groups seeking to exploit the situation to incite unrest.
“I urge all Indonesians to stay vigilant. There are always elements that want turmoil and chaos. I must emphasize that such actions bring no benefit to the people, the community, or our nation,” he said.
