Prabowo Ensures People’s Aspirations Are Heard: Parliament Revokes Allowances and Overseas Trips

Jakarta – President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto affirmed that the government and the House of Representatives (DPR RI) have listened to the aspirations and demands voiced by the people during recent demonstrations.

Prabowo emphasized that DPR leaders had agreed to revoke several parliamentary allowances and suspend overseas working visits.

“The DPR leadership conveyed that certain DPR RI policies will be revoked, including members’ allowances as well as a moratorium on overseas working trips,” Prabowo said during a press conference at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Sunday (31/8).

Present at the press conference were DPR Speaker Puan Maharani, MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani, and DPD Speaker Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin. Also in attendance were PDI-P Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, NasDem Chairperson Surya Paloh, PAN Chairperson Zulkifli Hasan, PKB Chairperson Muhaimin Iskandar, Golkar Chairperson Bahlil Lahadalia, Democrat Party Deputy Chairperson Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono (Ibas), and PKS Secretary-General Muhammad Kholid.

Prabowo added that the DPR leadership and political party leaders had taken firm action against several members whose statements had stirred public unrest. Party leaders officially revoked their membership in DPR RI effective September 1, 2025.

“The firm step taken by the party leaders is to revoke their memberships in the DPR RI,” Prabowo stated.

“DPR leaders and party chairpersons also stressed that DPR members must always remain sensitive to and side with the interests of the people,” he asserted.

On the occasion, Prabowo reiterated that the government respects freedom of expression as guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution, Law No. 9/1998, and the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. However, he underlined that aspirations must be expressed peacefully.

“If, in practice, there are anarchic activities, damage to public facilities, casualties, threats, looting of public institutions or private homes, such acts constitute legal violations, and the state is obliged to be present and protect its citizens,” he said.
