Bogor — President Joko Widodo Prabowo Subianto has underscored the critical importance of ensuring that Indonesia’s substantial education budget is properly channeled to those who need it most. Speaking at the National Education Day ceremony at SDN Cimahpar 5 in Bogor, West Java, on Friday (May 2), the President emphasized that a nation’s future is shaped by the quality of its education.
“Let us stay vigilant and be honest with ourselves. With such a large education budget allocated over the years, has it truly reached its intended targets?” Prabowo questioned in his address.
He pointed out that Indonesia currently allocates one of the highest proportions of its state budget to education—reportedly over 22% of the national budget (APBN).
“Compared to other countries, Indonesia places education as a top priority in our state budget. As far as I know, the current allocation is over 22%, making it the highest,” he said.
Part of that budget, Prabowo added, is designated for the renovation of public schools. He expressed concern over the current condition of many schools, some of which still lack basic facilities.
“It’s hard to believe that there are still schools with only one toilet,” he noted.
The President also reminded regional leaders—governors, mayors, and regents—of their responsibility to ensure that the education budget is utilized efficiently and in accordance with actual needs. He noted that the central government continues to explore ways to increase education funding.
“I want to emphasize the responsibility of local governments—mayors, regents, and governors—working together. I’ve set what I consider a sizable budget for school repairs, but even that is not enough,” said Prabowo.
He stressed the need for ongoing cost-saving measures and rapid action to improve school infrastructure nationwide.
“We are constantly working with my cabinet to figure out how to find more funding. Frankly, too much of Indonesia’s wealth still leaks out and doesn’t reach the people,” he stated firmly.
Prabowo reiterated his commitment to clean governance, urging his administration to serve the people with integrity and transparency. He also made a strong stand against corruption at all levels of government.
“The budget intended for the people and public services must not be misused or manipulated in any way,” he concluded.
