Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto underscored the critical role of the judiciary as the last line of defense for justice in Indonesia. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for Supreme Court judges, he announced a strategic decision to increase salaries for judges nationwide.
Addressing newly appointed judges, Prabowo emphasized that nation-building is a long journey, requiring a strong legal system that ensures justice for all citizens.
“From history, we learn that one of the most crucial factors for a country’s success is having a legal system that guarantees justice for all. This is a fundamental requirement for any successful nation,” Prabowo asserted at the Supreme Court Building on Thursday (June 12).
Expressing concern about the integrity of the judiciary, Prabowo warned of the dangers of a weak judicial system. He highlighted the frustration of law enforcement officials—from police to military officers—who work tirelessly to apprehend corrupt figures only to see them evade justice in court.
“It’s pointless to have great police officers, a strong military, if corrupt officials, thieves, and criminals walk free in court,” Prabowo declared. He even turned to Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, stating:
“I feel for your officers, Chief.”
The remark reflected his frustration over failed justice, where law enforcement’s relentless efforts end up wasted due to court decisions that allow criminals to escape punishment.
To address this issue, Prabowo ordered his ministers, particularly the Finance Minister, to immediately secure funds to raise judicial salaries. He even offered to cut budgets from other institutions, including the military and police, if necessary, to uphold the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
“The Commander of the Armed Forces is here, the Police Chief is here. If needed, I’ll reduce the military and police budgets to fund this,” he affirmed.
Prabowo expressed shock upon learning that judges had not received a salary increase in 18 years—despite handling cases worth trillions of rupiah.
In a bold commitment, Prabowo officially announced a judicial salary increase, with the highest adjustment reaching 280%, primarily benefiting junior-level judges at the lowest ranks.
“The highest increase reaches 280%. The biggest raise goes to our junior judges, those at the lowest ranks. But all judges will receive a significant raise. I will personally monitor this,” Prabowo concluded.
