Jakarta — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto broke his silence following the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver, after a protest that spiraled into violence. He expressed deep disappointment and shock over what he described as excessive use of force by security officers.
“Once again, I am shocked and disappointed by the excessive actions of the officers. I have ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into last night’s incident, and all personnel involved must be held accountable,” Prabowo said in an official statement released via video on Friday (Aug. 29).
Prabowo stressed that he would not tolerate officers acting outside the bounds of propriety and regulations.
“We will take the firmest possible action in accordance with the law,” he added.
Before addressing the investigation, Prabowo first extended his condolences to Affan’s family.
“On behalf of myself and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences. I am deeply concerned and saddened by this tragedy,” he said.
The president also vowed government support for the victim’s family.
“The government will guarantee the well-being of his family and provide special attention to his parents and siblings,” Prabowo noted.
Prabowo further urged the public to remain calm and resist provocations from groups seeking to incite unrest.
“I call on all Indonesians to remain vigilant. There are elements that always seek to trigger chaos. I remind everyone that such actions serve no benefit to the people, society, or our nation,” he stated.
He concluded by underscoring that grievances must be voiced through legitimate channels.
“We must stay alert, remain calm, and never allow groups to instigate riots or disorder. Legitimate aspirations may and should be expressed, and we will work to address every issue that requires improvement,” Prabowo said.
