Jakarta — The official attire for the Indonesian contingent during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics has been unveiled.
Fashion designer Didit Hediprasetyo created the elegant, simple outfits with a strong traditional touch.
On his Instagram account, @didit.hediprasetyo, he posted two images showcasing the designed attire for the Indonesian contingent at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The men’s outfit adopts a biker style with a stonewashed denim jacket inspired by the traditional Beskap. This traditional Javanese jacket is paired with pristine white trousers, enhancing the athletic look. Completing the ensemble is the Blangkon, a traditional Javanese headpiece.
For the women’s uniform, the top features a vibrant red Kebaya Kutubaru, an elegant traditional blouse. This top is paired with white sports pants, blending grace, cleanliness, athleticism, and elegance.
According to the international fashion media outlet Vanity Fair, this creation represents a holistic approach that honors athletic performance and cultural pride. Each piece pays homage to Indonesia’s dynamic cultural heritage, enhancing a sense of unity and belonging.
“My goal is to create designs that reflect the pride, spirit, and resilience of our nation, while ensuring our athletes look and feel their best when competing on the world stage,” Didit said in a statement on Friday (July 26).
Didit revealed in the article that he was inspired by Raden Saleh, a romantic painter from Java. The journey of this Javanese artist to European palaces in the 19th century reflects Indonesia’s rise on the global stage.
Raden Saleh’s works, displayed in the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre, blend Javanese roots with European romanticism, a cultural legacy that Didit has skillfully conveyed through his fashion designs.
In addition to Vanity Fair, articles about the opening ceremony attire for the Indonesian team at the Olympics have also been featured in Vogue France and Numero France magazines.
