Jakarta — A warm and lighthearted moment took place at the Merdeka Palace following the official meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Microsoft founder and global philanthropist Bill Gates on Wednesday morning (May 7).
Beyond discussing potential collaborations and contributions from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Indonesia, the atmosphere turned relaxed when Gates met Bobby Kertanegara—Prabowo’s beloved cat. Bobby, gently pushed in a stroller, slowly approached the distinguished guest.
With a wide smile, Gates greeted Bobby and personally handed the cat a gift—a black-and-white whale plush toy. The simple gesture drew smiles and attention from attending ministers and officials, softening the formal occasion into a moment of warmth and camaraderie.
The exchange didn’t end there. Following their encounter with Bobby, President Prabowo presented Gates with a traditional keris, a ceremonial dagger symbolizing Indonesian cultural honor.
During his welcoming remarks earlier, Prabowo also expressed his intent to bestow one of Indonesia’s highest civilian honors upon Gates in recognition of his contributions to both Indonesia and humanity.
“I’ve informed him of my decision, as President of the Republic of Indonesia, to propose him for our nation’s highest award. His support has benefited not only Indonesia but humanity at large,” Prabowo stated. “I will convene the Honorary Decorations Council because I want, on behalf of the Indonesian people, to grant our highest medal to one of the world’s outstanding individuals for his service to our people and to the world.”
