Jakarta — Shoya Yoshida, Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), expressed his deep appreciation for the presence of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the 2025 International Labor Day celebration held at the National Monument (Monas), Jakarta, on Thursday (May 1).
In his welcoming remarks, Yoshida described the moment as a historic event that reflects the government’s genuine commitment to the future and welfare of Indonesian workers.
“This year’s Labor Day celebration is truly historic because it is attended by the Head of State,” said Yoshida to the workers and invited guests gathered at Monas.
“The President’s presence is a concrete sign of the government’s commitment to the future and welfare of workers in Indonesia.”
Prabowo’s attendance drew widespread attention, as he became the first Indonesian president since Sukarno in the 1960s to personally attend a Labor Day celebration.
Yoshida used his speech to emphasize the deep meaning of Labor Day as a symbol of workers’ struggle and solidarity. He also called for cross-sector collaboration in establishing a fair and inclusive labor system.
“International Labor Day is not just a celebration, but a symbol of the struggle and solidarity of the working class,” he said.
“It is crucial that workers in Indonesia collaborate with the government and employers to craft a fair, modern, and inclusive labor law that protects workers’ rights.”
Yoshida also acknowledged and praised the contributions of Indonesian union leaders who played a vital role in organizing the event.
“I want to thank the labor leaders here in Indonesia—Andi Gani, Said Iqbal, and Elly Silaban—for welcoming us.”
He concluded his speech by underscoring that the strength of the labor movement lies in unity and collective action.
“Let me end by saying that today’s International Labor Day celebration would not have been possible without unity and solidarity.”
