President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, reaffirmed Indonesia’s strong commitment to upholding cultural values and interfaith tolerance during a press statement following a visit to the Borobudur Temple with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (May 29).
Speaking at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Magelang, Central Java, Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia’s rich diversity is a unifying strength, rooted in the nation’s foundational philosophy, Pancasila.
“Indonesia is a nation whose foundational philosophy is Pancasila — a belief in respecting all religions and all faiths,” said Prabowo.
He noted that Indonesia’s identity as a multicultural nation — with its diverse ethnicities, religions, and cultures — is based on mutual respect and tolerance. These values, he said, are shared by France and form the foundation for deepening bilateral ties.
“We share the same spirit, the same values: tolerance, respect for cultural heritage, respect for all religions, beliefs, all races, and all ethnic groups,” he stated.
Prabowo described both Indonesia and France as great nations with long histories, deeply rooted cultures, and rich civilizations. He highlighted a shared vision between the two countries in upholding humanity and promoting global peace.
“Indonesia and France are two great nations with long histories, deeply rooted cultures, and ancient civilizations,” he added.
According to Prabowo, Macron’s state visit to Indonesia is a meaningful moment to strengthen cooperation and friendship in key areas such as culture, education, and defense.
“We firmly believe that through friendship, kinship, and collaboration, we can all build a better future,” Prabowo concluded.
