Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, led the National Pilgrimage and Solemn Vigil to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Sunday (Aug. 17) at exactly 12:00 a.m. local time.
The ceremony, a long-standing tradition held by the Head of State on the eve of Indonesia’s Independence Day commemoration, serves as a gesture of deep respect for those who fought for the nation’s freedom.
President Prabowo was joined by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. The President proceeded to lay a wreath before leading a moment of silence in memory of the fallen heroes.
“Brothers and sisters, let us pause for a moment to remember the souls and sacrifices of our heroes — those who gave their lives for the independence and sovereignty of Indonesia. Let us now observe a moment of silence,” President Prabowo said.
The atmosphere was solemn as the moment of silence was accompanied by the soft strains of a marching band, followed by a ceremonial salute to honor the nation’s heroes.
