KUALA LUMPUR — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the 16th Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP–EAGA) Summit held at Conference Hall II, Level 3 of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia, on Tuesday (27/5).
The summit centered on strengthening connectivity and boosting economic development in the eastern sub-region of ASEAN. President Prabowo was accompanied by several key ministers, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan P. Roeslani, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
President Prabowo’s participation alongside top officials demonstrated Indonesia’s strong commitment to enhancing regional economic cooperation, investment, and infrastructure development—especially in eastern Indonesia, a vital component of the BIMP–EAGA initiative.
Established in 1994, BIMP–EAGA is a sub-regional cooperation framework aimed at accelerating development in border and remote areas. It encompasses eastern Brunei Darussalam, parts of Indonesia (Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua), Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan), and the entire southern Philippines.
In his address, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. praised member countries for their continued commitment to regional collaboration, particularly over the past eight years since the adoption of the BIMP–EAGA Vision 2025.
“For decades, BIMP–EAGA has served as a testament to the power of collaboration. This initiative has successfully bridged development gaps, strengthened partnerships, and enhanced our cross-border connectivity,” Marcos Jr. stated in his remarks.
The 16th BIMP–EAGA Summit is part of a broader series of high-level ASEAN meetings taking place in Malaysia throughout the end of May 2025. The forum aims to further position Eastern ASEAN as an emerging, inclusive, and cooperative growth center within the region.
