Prabowo Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthen Indonesia–Brunei Ties Amid Global Challenges

Bandar Seri Begawan — President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed his commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Brunei Darussalam, especially in light of increasingly complex global and regional dynamics.

“In the face of growing global and regional uncertainty, only through cooperation among ASEAN member states can we protect one another,” President Prabowo said during a state address at the Istana Nurul Iman on Wednesday (May 14).

Both leaders underscored the importance of the close relationship between Indonesia and Brunei—two nations bound by shared cultural, linguistic, religious, and historical ties.

President Prabowo described the bond between the two countries as a long-standing familial relationship that must be continually nurtured.

“Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam are nations of the same root—one culture, one history, one language, and one faith. We don’t just feel like family; we truly are family,” he stated.

“As the President of the Republic of Indonesia, entrusted by the people, I am deeply committed to preserving and strengthening the close relationship we’ve long enjoyed—and elevating it even further,” Prabowo continued.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah also shared his perspective on the bilateral relationship, emphasizing that it is built on mutual trust and Islamic values.

“The Muslim ummah is like one body—when one part suffers, the whole body feels the pain,” the Sultan said, quoting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The two heads of state further highlighted the importance of synergy and collaboration within ASEAN, particularly in anticipation of the 46th ASEAN Summit and the drafting of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.

President Prabowo’s visit to Brunei Darussalam serves as a symbol of Indonesia’s continued active diplomacy in Southeast Asia, reinforcing the country’s strategic role in promoting regional stability and solidarity.
