Presidential Office Responds to Crude Oil Corruption Scandal, Highlights Cleanup Efforts in State-Owned Enterprises

The Indonesian government, through the Presidential Office, has issued a statement regarding the crude oil export and import corruption scandal involving PT Pertamina. An investigation by the Attorney General’s Office uncovered alleged fuel manipulation involving two Pertamina subsidiaries, Pertamina Patra Niaga and Pertamina International Shipping.

Hasan Nasbi, Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), emphasized the government’s full support for ongoing law enforcement efforts.

“This crackdown on corruption aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to combat corruption in all forms, whether within state institutions or state-owned enterprises (SOEs),” Hasan stated in a video press release on Thursday (February 27, 2025).

“The government fully supports the Attorney General’s legal action because this is part of President Prabowo’s broader agenda to fight corruption. Corruption, wherever it occurs—whether in government institutions, state-owned enterprises, at the central or regional level—must be eradicated,” he added.

Beyond legal measures, the government is also urging Pertamina, both at the holding and subsidiary levels, to improve its corporate governance in the wake of this scandal. The reforms, officials hope, will strengthen Pertamina’s position and enhance its professionalism.

Hasan underscored Pertamina’s role as one of Indonesia’s key economic pillars, stressing that a comprehensive cleanup is necessary to ensure good corporate governance.

“Pertamina is a national asset, a major force in Indonesia’s economy, and possibly the only Indonesian company listed in the Fortune 500. We support Pertamina’s efforts to clean up its operations so that it emerges as a stronger, more prudent, accountable, and transparent company,” Hasan explained.

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto himself underscored the government’s serious attention to the fuel fraud case. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to overhauling the country’s oil and gas sector while prioritizing the public’s interests.

“We are handling everything. We are cleaning it up, enforcing the rules, and ensuring that the people’s interests come first,” President Prabowo said during an event at Gade Tower, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 26, 2025).
