Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has explained why Indonesia wants to join many international organisations, from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
Prabowo said this when speaking as a keynote speaker at the World Government Summit international forum held on Thursday (13/2) in Dubai, virtually.
Prabowo said Indonesia has always adhered to the non-aligned movement and the principles of equality. In this case, according to him, balanced diplomacy is important.
‘We strive to listen as much as we say, forging partnerships based on trust and mutual respect,’ Prabowo said.
Through the non-aligned approach, according to Prabowo, Indonesia actively participates in many international organisations, including BRICS. Indonesia, Prabowo added, also applied to join the OECD, CPTPP, and the Indo-Pacific Forum.
‘This (non-aligned) approach guides Indonesia’s participation in many international organisations: BRICS, we also applied to join the OECD, CPTPP, and the Indo-Pacific Forum, which advocates equal dialogue rather than hostility,’ Prabowo explained.
‘It also marks our relationship with big countries like the United States and the People’s Republic of China while maintaining our own independence,’ he continued.
Prabowo continued that going forward, Indonesia wants to strengthen its role as a force for regional stability and development while maintaining its position as a bridge between the Global South and the Global North to promote peace, cooperation, and stability.
However, Prabowo said that in order to become an actor on the global stage, it is equally important to maintain order at home.
‘We have to do our own homework. Our international influence and our ability to make a meaningful contribution to global stability is linked to our strength, our own resilience, and the economic progress and social welfare of our nation and people,’ Prabowo said.
‘We want to build a modern and advanced country that is supported by our greatest assets – our people and abundant natural resources,’ he added. (RR)
