Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his commitment to defend Gaza at the World Governments Summit international forum on Thursday (13/2). Speaking online, he called on world leaders that Gaza’s suffering must stop and rebuilding needs to be done immediately.
Before delivering his remarks, Prabowo admitted that he wished he could attend the meeting in person, which was held in Dubai. However, he was unable to attend.
‘I wish I could attend in person, but my schedule does not allow it. A few hours ago I was just elected for the next five years as Chairman of my political party,’ he said.
Furthermore, he highlighted the rapidly changing international environment, characterised by economic instability and protectionism. According to him, if not dealt with wisely, these changes could become uncontrollable.
‘Countries, regardless of size, must uphold these principles and protect the world from uncontrollable conflicts-whether in Ukraine, Gaza, or emerging crises in Africa, such as Eastern Congo,’ Prabowo said.
He continued that what is happening in Gaza is a deep tragedy. Although a ceasefire has been enacted, hopes and prayers alone, according to Prabowo, are not enough. Peace must be ensured.
‘Gaza has suffered enough! Now is the time to rebuild homes, reopen schools, and restore normalcy,’ he exclaimed.
‘Indonesia supports efforts towards a just and lasting settlement, based on a two-state solution,’ he continued.
He considered that mere rhetoric was not enough to face the challenges of world instability. Thus, he called on the international community to endeavour to stop the violence in Gaza and elsewhere.
‘The world must not allow the cycle of violence to continue. The crises in Ukraine, Gaza, Eastern Congo, and other parts of Africa, reflect the widespread erosion of global stability. Indonesia understands that rhetoric alone is not enough to face this challenge,’ he concluded. (RR)
