People enthusiastically welcome Prabowo Subianto late at night in New Delhi: Didn’t Expect You to Shake Our Hands

New Delhi – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in New Delhi, India, on Thursday night (23/1). Despite arriving late at night at around 10.30pm local time, Indonesian citizens in India enthusiastically welcomed Prabowo at the hotel where he was staying.

Nadine Ardiani Chairunisa, an Indonesian student in India studying at Amity University majoring in Marketing Communication, said she and dozens of other Indonesians had been waiting to welcome Prabowo since 5pm.

“The preparation was quite exciting and fun and a little tense. Because there was news of delays several times,” said Nadine along with fellow student Demas Fadel Anggara from Delhi University majoring in Computer Science.

“I’m really happy that we as students here are just representatives of Indonesia and it’s great to have the opportunity to welcome the president so closely like earlier,” they said.

Other Indonesian citizens who were met at the location were Rajendra, Marvell, and Adyatama. The three of them had the opportunity to shake hands with Prabowo when welcoming him at the hotel.

“At first we didn’t expect Mr Prabowo to shake our hands one by one. We are all very grateful to have a president who wants to come down directly to greet his people,” they said.

They hoped that Prabowo’s working visit in India would run smoothly and that Indonesia under Prabowo’s leadership would be even better in the future.

“I hope you enjoy your stay in New Delhi and I hope our welcome is well received,” said Marvell.

“I hope you enjoy your time in India and I hope Indonesia becomes better than the best,” said Rajendra.

Prabowo’s visit to India marks a new chapter in bilateral relations, as well as commemorating 75 years of diplomatic cooperation between Indonesia and India.

In a press statement before departure at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base Jakarta, Prabowo expressed his pride at the invitation as chief guest at the 76th Indian Republic Day celebrations. This invitation is considered to be a symbol of extraordinary honour for Indonesia.

“In the celebration of their 76th republic day, they also invited our TNI troops who will participate in the defile. And if I’m not mistaken, we got our place of honour at the front of the defile as an honour contingent. Present from us are 352 TNI soldiers and cadets from the military academy,” he said.

The state visit is also scheduled to include bilateral meetings with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The agenda will discuss various strategic issues, including strengthening cooperation between the two countries. (RR)
