President Prabowo Subianto summoned Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and Deputy Minister of KKP Didit Herdiawan at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, 20 January 2025, to discuss the sea fence issue in the coastal area of Tangerang, Banten Province. In his statement after the meeting, Sakti said that the construction of the sea fence in the area was carried out without a permit.

‘I also conveyed that the same thing happened not only in Tangerang, Banten but also in Bekasi. Especially in Tangerang, Banten, I reported that we found that there was no permit,’ said Sakti.

According to him, the construction of the sea fence violates the provisions in the Job Creation Law which requires every development in sea space to have a permit for the suitability of sea space utilisation activities or KKPRL. Therefore, as a first step, his party has sealed the construction.

‘After we do the sealing, we identify who owns it, when we do the sealing, we don’t know who owns it. Juridically, there must be someone who recognises who owns it and so on,’ he said.

Furthermore, Sakti said that there is a certificate of ownership on the seabed with an area of up to 30 hectares which is considered illegal. Related to this, Sakti said that President Prabowo has ordered that this problem be investigated thoroughly.

‘Earlier, the President instructed us to investigate the matter thoroughly legally so that we have the correct legal corridor. If there is none, it must become state property,’ he added.

On this occasion, Sakti also said that the handling of the sea fence issue will be carried out thoroughly and involve various parties from the Indonesian Navy to the Marine Security Agency (Bakamla). This collaborative step is needed to ensure that actions are in accordance with the applicable legal corridors.

‘The point is that I reported it earlier. If not, it is the right of the state because it is certain that abrasion will occur. But on the other hand, because we have promised to revoke it, we will work together with all parties so that there will be no mistakes,’ he added. (RU)
