London — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s residence at 10 Downing Street, London, on Thursday (11/21). This meeting followed Prabowo’s earlier engagement with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.
Prabowo and Starmer discussed strengthening the strategic partnership between Indonesia and the UK. The meeting also marked the 75th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two nations. Key areas of cooperation included the economy, defense, and climate.
“We have agreed to pursue a new, deeper Strategic Partnership between the UK and Indonesia, which we will launch in 2025. This partnership will provide a more prosperous, secure, and sustainable future for the people of both nations,” the two leaders stated in a joint declaration published on the UK government’s official website.
This partnership is expected to establish a framework that involves businesses, academics, research institutions, cultural organizations, and the broader public.
Both countries committed to promoting economic growth and exchanged views on the current global political uncertainties, agreeing to work more closely to address global challenges.
Prabowo and Starmer highlighted opportunities to collaborate in advancing energy transition, sustainable strategic industries, and defense industry partnerships.
“Recognizing the magnitude of current global economic challenges, we agreed to take all necessary measures to enhance trade between the two countries, removing barriers to generate growth and create jobs in both nations,” the statement read.
The discussions also emphasized energy transition, with both leaders advocating for a fair and equitable transition, reducing carbon emissions, protecting natural environments, and ensuring economic development.
“Indonesia welcomes the UK’s support for green transition. We look forward to deepening our cooperation in sustainable infrastructure, building on our track record of leveraging green infrastructure to drive sustainable growth,” the statement concluded. (RR)
