Jakarta — In his inaugural speech as the newly sworn-in President of Indonesia for the 2024-2029 term, Prabowo Subianto firmly emphasized the importance of eradicating corruption across all sectors of government. Speaking before the members of Indonesia’s parliament at the DPR/MPR building in Jakarta on Sunday (October 20), Prabowo declared that corruption must be rooted out completely, and that all leaders must set a good example for the people.

“We must have the courage to face and eradicate corruption. By improving the system, enforcing strict laws, and leveraging digitalization, God willing, we will significantly reduce corruption,” Prabowo stated.

He stressed that leaders at all levels of government must lead by example in implementing a clean administration. Referring to a popular saying, Prabowo remarked, “If the head of the fish is rotten, the entire body will rot,” implying that corrupt leadership at the top would taint the entire nation.

“All officials, from every echelon, must set an example by practicing the cleanest leadership possible,” Prabowo emphasized.

The president also highlighted the need for strict and fair law enforcement to lift the country out of poverty. He expressed confidence that through honesty and transparency in governance, Indonesia can eliminate the widespread poverty that continues to affect large portions of the population.

Furthermore, Prabowo called on all sectors of society to unite in addressing the significant challenges facing the nation, both from external and internal sources. He urged everyone to face the reality that corruption and budget mismanagement remain major issues in Indonesia.

“We must face the fact that there are still too many leaks, misappropriations, and collusion between political officials, government officials, and unscrupulous businesspeople,” Prabowo noted.

He warned that these challenges threaten the future of the younger generation and must be tackled immediately. Prabowo expressed concern over the ongoing poverty in many areas, where many children still go to school without proper meals or adequate clothing.

“We still see many of our fellow citizens who have yet to enjoy the fruits of independence. Too many children go to school without breakfast, and too many lack proper clothing,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo’s speech received positive reactions from the attendees, signaling his commitment to establishing a government that is clean, transparent, and focused on the welfare of the people. (RR)
