PNG – President-elect Prabowo Subianto extended a personal invitation to Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister James Marape to attend his upcoming inauguration on October 20, 2024. This invitation was conveyed directly by Prabowo during his bilateral visit to PNG on Wednesday, (21/8).

“I have come here specifically to convey my respectful greetings to Your Excellency in return for the great honor you have shown me. And I would also be deeply honored if you could attend my inauguration on October 20,” said Prabowo.

Prabowo further expressed his appreciation for the extraordinary reception he received from the PNG government. He was surprised by the presidential-like welcome he received, despite not yet officially assuming the presidency.

“I want to express my deepest thanks and appreciation for the warm welcome you extended to me, which I did not expect because I thought I had not fully assumed the role of the President of Indonesia yet, but you gave me a beautiful ceremony at the airport today,” Prabowo remarked.

Prabowo then shared a touching and personal impression of Prime Minister Marape. He even humorously mentioned that although Marape is younger, there are many valuable lessons Prabowo has learned from him.

“Your Excellency, I would like to say this: in the few minutes I have met you, I felt your sincerity, your friendship, and your wisdom as a leader. I have found that I have learned very important ideas and advice from you, which I have noted, especially regarding your thoughts, your commitment, your relationships, and also your advice regarding the characteristics of the people on both sides of our border. Thank you very much for your insights. Your vision is very encouraging to me. I don’t know, perhaps in age I am older than you, but based on experience, you have more than I do,” Prabowo said with a laugh.

In response, Prime Minister Marape expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Prabowo’s visit. He also confirmed that he would attend Prabowo’s inauguration in October.

“On behalf of every citizen of our country, we want to thank you for your kindness, your generosity with your time, and your humility in coming to meet with us at this time. You have invited me, on behalf of Papua New Guinea in this context, I accept the invitation, on behalf of all of us, to be in Indonesia for your inauguration,” said PM Marape. (RR)
