Designer Didit Hediprasetyo has unveiled the uniforms of Indonesian athletes for the opening of the Paris Games. A couture marriage of tradition and modernity.
The Olympics and fashion go hand in hand. Further evidence of this comes from the official uniforms of Indonesian athletes created by Indonesian designer Didit Hediprasetyo. Designed for the opening of the Games, the uniforms, with their elegant simplicity, condense modernity and tradition.
The designs embody a holistic approach that honors athletic performance and cultural pride. Each piece pays homage to Indonesia’s vibrant heritage, promoting a sense of unity and belonging . The artistic heritage of Raden Saleh, a romantic painter of Javanese origin, served as the inspiration for this collection. The artist’s journey from Central Java to the courts of Europe in the 19th century mirrors Indonesia’s rise to prominence on the global stage. His work, which has graced the halls of the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre, embodies a blend of Javanese roots and European romanticism, a fusion that Didit masterfully conveys.
“My goal was to create a design that embodies our nation’s pride, spirit and resilience, while ensuring our athletes look and feel their best as they compete on the world stage,” said Didit Hediprasetyo.
Designed with the needs of Olympians in mind, the uniforms offer maximum comfort and ease of movement thanks to high-quality, breathable fabrics that include stonewashed Indonesian denim and luxurious velvets and silk knits in a striking primary color palette.
The men’s wear is inspired by bikers, with washed denim jackets that have their roots in Beskap, a traditional Javanese men’s dress, paired with crisp white pants for an athletic look. The women’s uniform, featuring a Kebaya Kutubaru top in a rich primary red and complemented by white sweatpants, combines sportiness with regal elegance.
The attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the intricate stitching to the placement of the Indonesian emblem accented by red and white leather stripes to the sophisticated Javanese men’s turban, a Blangkon with a contemporary touch of leather and denim. It all adds up to the overall harmony of the ensemble.
